With synthetic grass becoming increasingly popular, we have gotten huge amount of pet-specific queries from those who have fluffy loved ones. Check out a few of the most frequent questions we get regarding artificial turf for dogs in Edmonton.

IS IT SAFE FOR DOGS?

Yes! Artificial turf is harmless to pets — canine and feline alike. Pet turf is developed to be much more resilient than both organic grass and conventional artificial grass. You won’t need harsh pesticides or fertilizers, either, so you won’t need to be concerned about those chemicals like you would with organic grass. Dogs can be sensitive to grass pollen, so when you make the change to artificial, you might even see Fido encounter fewer allergies, too.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN UP PET WASTE?

Dogs can use the turf as their bathroom like they already know how to do — the only difference here is the clean-up process is painless for you. It is much easier to remove pet waste off synthetic grass, and the turf won’t fade or become stained from dog urine or feces. Southwest Greens pet turf is created with a sophisticated backing system under the surface that allows urine and other fluids to drain more efficiently than natural turf. For solid waste, simply let it dry a little before clean-up for best results. If you’re left with marks, a quick splash with the hose will eliminate any remaining waste.

WILL IT SMELL BAD FROM DOG URINE?

Artificial grass is odorless, so if any odors do occur, it’s often caused by dog urine specifically. Many pets favor to use one particulara particular area of the yard to do their business, so occassionally, a little odor can build-up. Southwest Greens turf system is antimicrobial, which can cut down on the smell, but there are things you can do to make sure no smells ramain. We advise you use a solution of one-to-one parts water and vinegar to spray Fido’s favorite bathroom area. Let it dry to remove any lingering odor.

CAN PETS DAMAGE SYNTHETIC GRASS?

Because synthetic grass is designed to stand up to heavy, constant use, it makes it very difficult for dogs to damage. Digging is almost impossible for them on synthetic turf. No more dirty paw prints being tracked into your house as well!

DO FLEAS AND TICKS LIVE IN SYNTHETIC GRASS?

Because synthetic turf is made from a non-organic material, it is very difficult for fleas, ticks, and other pests to survive in the turf. While there is no guarantee that your lawn will be 100% pest-free, you can trust us that they will be mostly eliminated. Because there’s no soil to sustain their nesting, but you must watch out for any accumulation of leaves or debris that might create a good breeding environment for fleas and ticks. As long as you clean your synthetic lawn regularly, there will be hardly any pests.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN ARTIFICIAL GRASS FOR DOGS?

Be sure to remove waste as soon as possible to stop any odors. To keep everything clean and looking great, we recommend you hose the grass down weekly. This will help keep your lawn from smelling bad. Get rid of any leaf or other loose debris to keep your lawn unhinibatblefor fleas and ticks.

HOW MUCH DOES ARTIFICIAL GRASS COST?

This will totally depend on your project, so it’s difficult to give an exact estimate. The following factors that might affect the price are:

  • Size/dimensions of the space being converted from natural turf to artificial
  • Inticracy of design and layout you want to setup
  • Type of artificial grass products you're looking to get
  • How much work needs to be done (pull out old grass, leveling surface, etc.)

Be cautious with contractors who provide you a set price for a project, in spite of how much work it involves. This is usually a tell-tale sign that they aren’t using high-quality materials.

HOW LONG WILL ARTIFICIAL TURF LAST?

Pet turf is estimated to last between 10-20 years, depending on use. Southwest Greens's oldest installations are 20 years old and have maintained the healthy green color and consistency of genuine turf. Our UV-resistant synthetic turf products look and work like new because they are engineered to endure heavy traffic, extreme climate conditions, and temperature fluctuations for all-year use. All installations come bundled with a one-year workmanship warranty and a manufacturer's warranty that covers fading.
